The motifs and patterns I create originate in printmaking. There is ample challenge in capturing the beauty and detail of a flower through the lens of positive and negative space. Carving the intricate details is a rather meditative practice but is offset with the nerve-racking anticipation of revealing
the first print.
After a plate has been carved, inked, and printed, the image is scanned in for patterning. Creating patterns and repeats from these motifs allows them to interact and play off one another in new ways. Designing in collections allows for the play of pattern, rhythm, movement, and balance.
Prints begin in a monochromatic palette and color is added in layers. As colors are introduced, the prints suddenly brim with life and personality. Building out a full and cohesive color palette sets the stage for the story of the collection. Detailed elements are spotlighted in feature roles while smaller elements add depth and texture to the story through supporting parts.
And so, the story of the collection emerges.
